Yoga Sutras 1.1

With humility (an open heart and mind), we embrace the sacred study of Yoga. from the secret power of yoga, by nischala joy devi. her translation doesn’t include the word Atha, so i went looking for it via google and found this article. i noticed only after linking it to my blog that it is written by richard rosen!

his article begins with

Atha yoga anushasanam
Now, the teachings of yoga.
—Yoga Sutra 1.1

atha being defined as NOW in rosen’s article. these two translations don’t seem contradictory, simply different ways of expressing an intention. this morning while meeting with my yoga buddy, eva, we talked about the potential of receiving the information simply by stating our intention to receive. michelle and carrie both have said in different ways that simply by being here we have programmed somehow our brains to be open to this information. i like this idea. devi’s book tells a story for this sutra, about a traditional offering from student to teacher when beginning yoga training. in india, students often climb a coconut tree and cut one green coconut to give their teacher. when placing the coconut before the teacher, the student opens the hard shell with a sharp knife, presenting the soft interior to the teacher to take the first juicy bite of young coconut flesh. it is important that the student climb the tree and cut the fruit herself, as this makes the gift meaningful.

i have no young green coconut for you, michelle, but i have climbed many trees looking for fruit. i am enjoying this journey, and look forward to finding the perfect meaningful gift.
